Nigeria, India Deepen Strategic Ties as New High Commissioner Begins Diplomatic Mission

Nigeria and India are set to strengthen their longstanding bilateral relations following the formal commencement of Ambassador Saidu Dahiru Muhammad’s diplomatic assignment as Nigeria’s High Commissioner-designate to India.

The new envoy on Friday presented the Open Copies of his Letters of Credence to India’s Chief of Protocol, Amir Kumar, at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, marking the official start of his mission.

Following the presentation, Ambassador Muhammad held high-level talks with Sevala Naik Mude, India’s Additional Secretary for Central and West Africa, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Speaking after the meetings, the High Commissioner-designate said he reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to deepen cooperation with India across critical sectors while expressing his readiness to work closely with the Indian government to advance shared priorities.

“I expressed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening our long-standing strategic partnership and our readiness to work closely with the Government of India in advancing our mutual interests,” he said.

Discussions centred on broadening collaboration in trade and investment, defence and security, energy and critical minerals, agriculture and food security, information and communication technology, education, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, as well as cultural exchanges.

The diplomatic engagement comes at a strategic time as India continues to emerge as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and remains a major destination for Nigerian crude oil exports. The Asian nation is also among Nigeria’s leading investors, with significant interests in pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, manufacturing and the energy sector.

Analysts believe stronger ties with India could unlock fresh opportunities for Nigeria in infrastructure development, renewable energy, digital innovation, healthcare, agricultural mechanisation and industrial manufacturing. Such partnerships are expected to support Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda while creating jobs, boosting skills development and enhancing food security.

India’s globally recognised expertise in affordable healthcare, pharmaceuticals, digital public infrastructure and technological innovation is also seen as offering significant value to Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms.

Beyond India, Ambassador Muhammad’s concurrent accreditation to Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka is expected to expand Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic footprint across South Asia, opening new frontiers for trade, investment, education, tourism and private-sector collaboration.

The envoy noted that both countries expressed their readiness to work closely with India’s Ministry of External Affairs and other relevant institutions to translate diplomatic goodwill into tangible outcomes.

His appointment underscores Nigeria’s growing emphasis on economic diplomacy, with ambassadors increasingly tasked with attracting foreign investment, facilitating technology transfer, promoting commercial partnerships and strengthening international cooperation.

With India seeking deeper engagement with Africa and Nigeria pursuing sustainable economic growth through strategic global partnerships, observers believe the New Delhi mission could serve as a catalyst for increased bilateral trade, industrial cooperation, innovation and stronger people-to-people relations.

Ambassador Muhammad, who was accompanied by three diplomats from the Nigerian High Commission, is expected to play a pivotal role in unlocking new opportunities across South Asia while reinforcing Nigeria’s position as one of India’s most strategic partners on the African continent.
