The Anambra State Executive Council of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has set a target of securing 98 per cent of the votes cast in the state for its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the January 16, 2027 election.

The party chairman, Ikem Uzoezie, announced the target on Wednesday, November 4, in Awka during the inauguration of the Anambra chapter of the National Campaign Council for the Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket.

Uzoezie said the party was targeting approximately 1.5 million votes out of the estimated 2.917 million registered voters in Anambra State, compared to the approximately 600,000 votes Obi secured in the 2023 presidential election.

He told Legit.ng that the campaign council was determined to increase Obi’s electoral support in the state ahead of the 2027 general election.

At the inauguration, former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ifeanyi Ibezi, was appointed State Campaign Coordinator.

Uzoezie acknowledged that opposition to Obi’s presidential ambition remained significant in Anambra but expressed confidence that the newly appointed officials would deliver on the campaign council’s target.

He described the assignment as challenging but achievable, adding that the council had been working tirelessly since assuming office.

The party chairman also urged all directorates within the campaign council to expand their membership by recruiting men, women and young people capable of securing support at their respective polling units and wards.

Lawmakers Back Obi’s Campaign Efforts
Speaking at the inauguration, the State Campaign Coordinator, Ibezi, urged members of the campaign council to return to their respective wards and polling units to mobilise support for the NDC.

He also announced plans by the party to organise a major homecoming rally for Obi in Anambra State in the coming weeks.

According to him, the rally would attract millions of Anambra residents who would turn out to welcome the former governor to his home state.

He said: “We’ll shut down Anambra for Peter Obi. It will be a homecoming rally, where millions of Anambra people will turn out to welcome their own son.”

Also speaking, the House of Representatives caucus leader, Hon. Afam Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency, urged the various directorates to bring more women and young people into the campaign structure.

Similarly, Hon. Peter Uzokwe, representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, called on Nigerians to support Obi irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.

He maintained that an Obi presidency would serve the collective interest of the country.

In a separate interview with Legit.ng, Uzokwe criticised President Bola Tinubu’s performance, recalling his 2023 campaign promise on electricity supply.

He also urged the NDC to deploy at least 10 party agents to every polling unit across Anambra State and Nigeria to protect votes during the 2027 elections.

Peter Obi was ratified as the NDC presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections on May 29, 2026.
