Senator Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu stands as a true child of grace and destiny. Whether one admires him or holds a different view, few can deny the abundant favour that has marked his remarkable journey.

Born on 21 April 1960, he assumed office as Governor of Abia State in 1999 at the youthful age of 39, becoming one of the youngest governors in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

From the outset, the path was never smooth. He navigated daunting challenges with extraordinary resilience and determination.

In a candid conversation, he shared with me a guiding principle that has shaped his public life: “If you want to be a successful politician or leader, you must work for your people.” He described this as his greatest secret. That same philosophy shines through in his own words: “Leadership is not about power, but service. It is about inspiring hope, driving progress, and uniting Nigerians toward a brighter tomorrow.”

No matter differing opinions, one fact remains beyond question, Senator Kalu’s commitment to delivering tangible benefits to his constituents. Whether in his beloved Igbere hometown, Bende Local Government Area, or across the entire Abia North Senatorial District, he has consistently brought development home to the people.

Today, as he celebrates his 66th birthday, he has rightfully earned the stature of a seasoned statesman and trailblazer. His deep love for his people continues to define his legacy.

During his eight year tenure as Governor from 1999 to 2007, he quickly earned the prestigious title of “Action Governor of Nigeria” within just six months. He poured energy into infrastructure, constructing and rehabilitating roads, bridges, schools, and healthcare facilities across the state. His administration opened up rural communities, empowered small businesses, and fostered an environment attractive to investors. Abia State recorded one of the lowest poverty rates in the country at the time. In the sporting arena, he ushered in a golden era, with Enyimba Football Club clinching back to back CAF Champions League titles and placing Abia and Nigeria proudly on the continental stage.

As Senator representing Abia North, he has sustained this momentum with visible results. He has attracted and overseen the construction and rehabilitation of numerous rural roads, built and maintained schools, installed solar streetlights and water projects, and sponsored bills aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens. Education, healthcare, and youth empowerment remain at the heart of his legislative work.

Beyond public office, Senator Kalu has channelled personal resources into job creating ventures in Igbere and across Abia North. The Igbere Cashew Nut Processing Factory operates at full capacity, providing direct and indirect employment to thousands. The landmark solar panel production factory is advancing steadily, alongside the Keke tricycle manufacturing facility. He is also establishing the Orji Uzor Kalu University and Sun FM Igbere to attract investment, spark innovation, and offer meaningful opportunities for young people. These initiatives are supported by several farms that enhance food security and local entrepreneurship.

He stands out as a leader who has never exploited youth unemployment for personal gain. Instead, he envisions prosperity for all. This inclusive spirit finds clear expression through the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation, which offers cash grants to youths and women to launch or expand businesses. The Foundation also provides scholarships to hundreds of students in Nigerian universities and institutions abroad. His signature red roof classroom buildings now grace nearly every community in Abia North, improving access to quality education.

There is hardly any ward in Abia North that has not benefited from his representation in one form or another. In early 2023, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong, publicly praised his outstanding performance and urged others to follow his example, noting that if more leaders emulated him, Abia State would be far better. Even the current Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has acknowledged adopting elements of Senator Kalu’s infrastructure template, particularly in road development.

Like every mortal, Senator Kalu may have his imperfections, yet no fair observer can doubt his profound affection for his people or his genuine dedication to their advancement.

On this special occasion of his 66th birthday, I pray that the Almighty continues to bless him with robust health, profound wisdom, renewed strength, and many more years of meaningful service to Abia State, the South East region, and our beloved nation, Nigeria.
