AfroMedia Condemns Killing of Journalists in Gaza, Urges UN to Take Swift Action
The African Initiative for Journalism and Media (AfroMedia) has strongly condemned what it describes as systematic crimes by the Israeli occupation against journalists and civilians in Gaza since October 7, 2023. The group stressed that such actions constitute blatant violations of international laws and United Nations charters designed to protect civilians and media professionals in times of armed conflict.
According to the statement, reports from global organizations and professional bodies — including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) — have documented the deaths of more than 240 journalists and media workers in Gaza in recent months, along with numerous injuries and arrests. AfroMedia noted that these statistics make Gaza the most dangerous place in the 21st century to practice journalism.
The organization cited the killing of journalists such as Anas Al-Sharif, Hossam Shabat, Ismail Abu Hatab, and Yahya Sobeih as part of a deliberate effort to suppress truth, hide atrocities against civilians, and prevent the world from knowing the reality on the ground. It emphasized that these acts contravene the Geneva Conventions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, constituting war crimes that demand immediate accountability. AfroMedia also warned that continued silence from the international community only fuels such violations.
AfroMedia called on the United Nations and the wider international community to take urgent, concrete steps. These include issuing an official condemnation of the killings and targeting of journalists, initiating an urgent international investigation — including through the International Criminal Court — to prosecute those responsible, and granting access to independent international media teams to document events and prevent control of the media narrative. The group also urged the provision of preventive protection measures for journalists, including logistical support and equipment for reporting in conflict zones.
The statement stressed that the loss of so many journalists is not just a personal tragedy but also a severe blow to press freedom, transparency, and the public’s right to information. AfroMedia underscored that the conflict in Gaza is being fought not only on the ground but also in the media arena, making it imperative to protect what remains of free journalism in the region.
Defending journalists, AfroMedia concluded, is synonymous with defending truth and justice. Safeguarding their lives ensures that future generations can learn the truth without distortion or concealment. The organization called on all media and human rights bodies to unite in solidarity and apply pressure to end the Israeli military campaign in Gaza.
