Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has officially withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ending her brief bid for the 2027 election.

Yesufu had announced her intention to contest for the FCT senatorial seat on May 6 after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
She explained that her decision to run was inspired by the leadership experience she had gained within the party.
However, in a statement issued on Friday, Yesufu disclosed that the NDC had decided not to conduct primaries for the FCT Senate position, effectively bringing her ambition to an end.
“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!” she stated.
She appealed to her supporters to remain calm and stay focused on the broader political goal ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I urge each and every one of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!” she said, while expressing gratitude to supporters of the #AishaForSenate project for their dedication and commitment.
A known political ally of Peter Obi, Yesufu also reaffirmed her commitment to engaging with residents across the FCT.
According to her, she will visit all six Area Councils in the coming week to thank residents for their warm reception and continue advocating for improvements in the nation’s capital.
“In the coming week I will be returning back to all the 6 Area Councils God willing to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a #BetterFCT,” she added.
