Akpabio Cares Initiative Brings Free Medical Outreach to Surulere, Lagos, Set to Reach 700 Residents
Residents of Surulere, Lagos State, on Saturday turned out in large numbers to access free healthcare services provided by the Akpabio Cares Initiative, a humanitarian programme supported by the office of the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
The medical outreach, which offered free consultations, medications and eyeglasses, marked the third edition of the initiative within the last two years. Earlier editions had been successfully conducted in Osogbo, Osun State, and Yankaba in Kano State.
A large number of vulnerable residents benefited from the programme, receiving essential medical attention without any financial burden.

Addressing journalists at the venue, the Convener of the initiative and Senior Legislative Aide to the President of the Senate, Ahmed Tijani Mustapha, said the outreach was aimed at giving back to society through healthcare support.
“This initiative is our way of giving back, and we believe that good health is one of the greatest gifts anyone can receive,” Mustapha said. He disclosed that the Surulere outreach was designed to cater for about 700 beneficiaries through free medical consultations, drugs and eyeglasses.
Responding to questions on why the programme was hosted in Lagos rather than Senator Akpabio’s home state of Akwa Ibom, Mustapha explained that the Senate President’s responsibility extends to all Nigerians.
“Senator Godswill Akpabio is the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and his impact is meant to be felt across the entire country,” he noted.
Beneficiaries of the outreach expressed appreciation to Senator Akpabio and the organisers for the timely intervention.
One of them said, “We are deeply grateful to Senator Akpabio for remembering our community and reaching out to us. We pray that God grants him strength and success.”
Another beneficiary highlighted the importance of having a community indigene in a strategic position, stating, “We appreciate that Mustapha, who grew up in this area, was appointed by the Senate President and has attracted dividends of democracy to this community.”
At the close of the event, Ahmed Tijani Mustapha announced that the next phase of the Akpabio Cares Initiative would be taken to the North Central geopolitical zone, as the programme continues its commitment to providing accessible healthcare and promoting social responsibility across Nigeria.
