Attah Igala Fixes August 8 for 2026 New Yam Festival

The Attah Igala and President of the Kogi State Council of Chiefs, His Royal Majesty Alhaji Mathew Opaluwa Oguche Akpa II, has announced Saturday, August 8, 2026, as the date for the 2026 New Yam Festival, popularly known as Iyalo Igala.


According to the royal announcement, the cultural celebration will take place at 10:00 a.
m. at the Attah Igala Palace in Idah, Kogi State. The festival marks the end of the farming season and serves as a period of thanksgiving to God for abundance, unity, and blessings among the Igala people.
The Attah Igala described the festival as a celebration of heritage, unity, abundance, and gratitude to the Almighty. He called on sons and daughters of Igala land, both at home and in the diaspora, to come together in thanksgiving and rejoicing.
The monarch also prayed for sustained peace and prosperity in Igala land and across Kogi State. The palace further urged traditional rulers, chiefs, stakeholders, and members of the public to participate in the colourful cultural event.
