The Senate has called for urgent intervention to support the rebuilding of Singa Market in Kano State following a devastating fire outbreak that destroyed shops and livelihoods of hundreds of traders.
The call followed a motion moved by Senator Barau Jibrin, who drew the attention of lawmakers to the scale of destruction caused by the inferno and the urgent need for coordinated government intervention to restore economic activities in the affected market.
Leading debate on the motion, Senator Jibrin urged the Federal Government to provide special intervention measures, including relief materials and financial assistance to victims, to cushion the impact of the disaster and accelerate reconstruction of the market.
He noted that the fire incident had caused significant economic losses, leaving many traders without means of livelihood and threatening the economic stability of families dependent on the market for survival.
The lawmaker, however, commended the Federal Government for its prompt response, stating that it had already provided N5 billion to support affected victims. He also acknowledged the intervention of the APC Governors Forum, which donated an additional N3 billion to assist traders and support rebuilding efforts.
Senators unanimously supported the motion, emphasizing the importance of swift action to restore commercial activities and prevent prolonged economic hardship for victims.
The Senate subsequently urged relevant federal agencies and intervention bodies to ensure transparent and timely distribution of relief materials and funds to affected traders, while also calling for measures to prevent future fire outbreaks in major markets across the country.
Lawmakers stressed that rebuilding Singa Market would not only restore livelihoods but also strengthen economic resilience and commercial activities in Kano State and beyond.
