Beyond the Music: Davido’s Loyalty to Adeleke Puts Patriotism in the Spotlight

As Osun State prepares for its August 15, 2026 governorship election, one of the most striking stories is not about political defections, scandals or power struggles, but about loyalty, conviction and patriotism.

At the centre of the story is Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, who has remained firmly behind his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, in his bid for re-election.
Davido’s involvement goes beyond a celebrity endorsement. His political journey with his uncle began in 2022, when he played a significant role in Ademola Adeleke’s campaign and helped mobilise young people ahead of his victory over the then-incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the APC. At the time, Davido described his involvement simply as an expression of the importance of family.
Four years later, his renewed involvement has shown that his commitment was not temporary. In 2026, Davido formally joined the Accord Party in Osun State, collected his membership card and was appointed Head of Youth Mobilisation for the governor’s re-election campaign. He also chairs the Imole Youth Mobilisation Campaign Council, taking on the difficult grassroots work that goes beyond the glamour associated with his music career.
His loyalty has been tested by some of the most turbulent moments of the campaign. Following the freezing of Osun State’s statutory allocation account by the EFCC, which Governor Adeleke’s camp described as politically motivated, and amid allegations of planned violence and rigging, Davido remained publicly committed to the campaign. Rather than retreat, he declared that his team would still go to Osun despite intimidation and held a press conference urging residents to reject violence while highlighting what he described as his uncle’s achievements.
Davido also responded when governors from other states mocked Adeleke over his dancing and questioned his credibility. He defended his uncle publicly and backed his words with action, attending rallies, moving through crowds and dancing alongside the governor to his hit song, “Feel.” He also reached out directly to commercial motorcyclists and tricycle riders, encouraging young Nigerians to participate in the election.
His involvement also placed him at the centre of important political moments. Davido was present when President Bola Tinubu called Governor Adeleke to announce the lifting of the EFCC freeze on Osun’s accounts, a development seen as helping to ease tensions ahead of the election. Davido described the moment as historic, reflecting the unusual position he occupies as both a globally recognised entertainer and an increasingly visible political actor.
What makes his participation particularly notable is its physical and grassroots nature. As Chairman of the Imole Youth Mobilisation Campaign Council, Davido has immersed himself in efforts to energise young voters rather than limiting his participation to social media posts or occasional appearances. His actions demonstrate a combination of loyalty, courage and civic engagement.
The broader history of Osun politics also adds context to the story. The Adeleke family has long been prominent in the state, with Senator Isiaka Adeleke, the governor’s elder brother, having served as Osun State’s first civilian governor. The family’s political legacy has been associated with accessibility and populism, qualities that Davido has amplified through his enormous reach among young Nigerians.
Celebrities have played significant roles in politics around the world. Ronald Reagan moved from Hollywood to the presidency of the United States, while Volodymyr Zelensky transitioned from entertainment to the presidency of Ukraine. Davido’s role is different. Rather than seeking political office for himself, he has chosen to use his influence to support a family member and participate actively in the political process.
In a political environment where loyalty can sometimes be shaped by convenience or personal interest, Davido’s consistency stands out. He supported his uncle in 2022 and has returned in 2026 with even greater commitment. His actions invite Nigeria’s political class to reconsider the meaning of loyalty and patriotism and to recognise that genuine commitment is demonstrated through consistent action, especially when circumstances become difficult.
His involvement also highlights the growing importance of young people in Nigerian politics. With more than 70 per cent of Nigeria’s population under the age of 35, youth participation can significantly influence elections and governance. Davido’s mobilisation efforts in Osun demonstrate the potential of young Nigerians to shape electoral outcomes through voting, advocacy and grassroots participation.
The lesson is clear. Patriotism should not be reduced to slogans, flag-waving or political speeches. It should involve commitment, courage, sacrifice and a willingness to stand by what one believes in, particularly during difficult moments. Davido’s example also shows that politics is not exclusively the preserve of career politicians. Celebrities, young people and ordinary citizens all have roles to play in shaping their communities and country.
As Osun approaches its August 15 election, Davido’s campaign will remain a story about family, loyalty, courage and patriotism. More importantly, it offers a broader lesson to Nigeria’s political class and citizens: true commitment is measured not by words alone, but by consistent action when the stakes are high.
