Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has formally defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move set to recalibrate the dynamics of Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of 2027.

Obi announced his defection on Tuesday in Enugu, where he appeared alongside prominent political leaders from the South-East.

The decision, he said, followed months of consultations within and outside the region.

“After months of consultations, we have taken this decision to join the African Democratic Congress and work with other opposition leaders nationwide to rescue Nigeria from the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress,” Obi declared while addressing supporters and party stakeholders.

He emphasised that the move reflects a collective resolve among South-East political leaders to pursue a broad-based coalition committed to national unity, accountability, transparency, and people-centred governance.

According to him, the ADC platform offers an opportunity to build a viable political front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Political analysts believe the development could significantly reshape opposition formations in the build-up to the 2027 general elections, particularly in the South-East, where Obi retains a formidable support base.

With his entry into the ADC, attention is now focused on the party’s next steps, including efforts to consolidate its national structure and forge alliances with other opposition actors as Nigeria gradually enters another election cycle.
