The Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN) has congratulated Mrs. Omobolanle Akinyemi-Obe on her appointment as the new Director-General of the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC).

During a courtesy visit to the NSCC headquarters in Abuja, COSROPIN President, Senator Eze Ajoku (OFR), described her appointment as a welcome development and a renewed source of hope for older persons across the country.

He noted that COSROPIN has long sought to partner with the Centre but lamented that the previous administration failed to embrace such collaboration.

“We celebrate your new role, and we are optimistic about the future with you at the helm of this important institution. Your appointment represents not just a career milestone but renewed hope for millions of older Nigerians who deserve to live their later years in dignity, safety, and care,” he said.

Senator Ajoku emphasized that effective leadership at the Centre was crucial, while introducing COSROPIN as a coalition of over 174 organizations, including CSOs, CBOs, NGOs, FBOs, pension unions, retired service groups, caregivers, and advocacy bodies.

He stressed that ageing is a reality for all, adding that the coalition has consistently championed reforms to safeguard the rights and welfare of the elderly. “We envision a society where ageing is not equated with abandonment, but where elders are valued as repositories of knowledge, culture, and resilience,” he said.

Ajoku further urged the new DG to prioritize the review and full implementation of the National Policy on Ageing, which he said had suffered distortions and neglect, hindering effective service delivery to older persons.

In response, Mrs. Akinyemi-Obe thanked COSROPIN for the visit and acknowledged its advocacy efforts over the years. She assured the coalition of the Centre’s readiness to collaborate in improving the welfare of older Nigerians.

She disclosed that Nigeria has over 10 million older persons, with about 4 million classified as vulnerable, underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions.

The DG pledged to focus on practical outreach programs in rural communities rather than limiting efforts to seminars and conferences. She also revealed plans to partner with the Ministry of Health, SMEDAN, and state governments to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens nationwide.

Mrs. Akinyemi-Obe further promised to set up joint committees with COSROPIN to design and implement impactful programs. While commending the coalition’s contributions to elder care, she urged all stakeholders to look beyond past challenges and embrace renewed hope for older persons in Nigeria.

On the pending COSROPIN Older Persons Bill awaiting public hearing at the National Assembly, she assured the Centre’s full support to ensure its passage.
