The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has commended the INEC Press Corps for their influential role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through consistent and credible election reporting.

Prof. Amupitan gave the commendation on Friday during the unveiling of a new book titled “The INEC Press Corps: Chronicles of Nigeria’s Election Journalists,” authored by the Chairman of the Corps, Mr. Segun Ojumu. The event took place at The Electoral Institute in Abuja.

Describing the book as a significant addition to Nigeria’s electoral documentation, the INEC Chairman said it provides a rare and valuable perspective on the sacrifices, challenges, and contributions of journalists who cover elections across the country.

“This publication is not just a book — it is a historical record that captures the vital role of the media in ensuring transparency and accountability in the nation’s electoral process,” he said.

Prof. Amupitan noted that the Press Corps serves as a critical communication link between INEC and the electorate, adding that their work during recent electoral activities — including the Anambra Governorship Election and the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) — helped boost public awareness and strengthened electoral monitoring.

He cautioned that in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly, the professionalism and accuracy of accredited journalists remain key to public trust. He urged journalists to rely on verified information from INEC’s official digital platforms and communication channels.

“As we prepare for upcoming elections — including the FCT Area Council Elections in 2026, and the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun — collaboration with the media is essential. The era of unverified reporting must end,” he stated.

He further called for a united effort between INEC and the media in tackling threats such as vote-buying, fake news, and narratives that undermine electoral credibility.

The INEC Chairman also congratulated Mr. Ojumu on the publication, describing it as a guidebook for strengthening election reportage and democratic accountability.

The event attracted dignitaries including the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; Chairman, Inter-Party Advisory Council, Yusuf Dantalle; FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Aminu Idris; Acting Director-General, The Electoral Institute, Prof. Ibrahim Sanni; senior INEC officials, media practitioners, and other key stakeholders.
