Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union scheduled for February 14 to 15.

His arrival was confirmed in a statement issued by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, through the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

Shettima was received at Bole International Airport by senior Ethiopian government officials and representatives of the Nigerian Embassy.

The minister also outlined Nigeria’s diplomatic achievements at the recently concluded 48th Session of the AU Executive Council, including the Council’s decision to grant Nigeria a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank.

He described the development as a landmark step reflecting Nigeria’s strategic role in shaping Africa’s financial and monetary integration framework.

Tuggar explained that the decision additionally secures Nigeria’s representation on the Board of the African Monetary Institute, which is tasked with paving the way for the establishment of the African Central Bank. He said the move affirms Nigeria’s technical expertise, economic relevance, and commitment to continental integration.

On peace and security, the minister noted that candidates jointly endorsed by the Economic Community of West African States were successfully elected to the AU Peace and Security Council, a development he said demonstrates unity among member states and a shared commitment to regional and continental stability.
