A high-level delegation from the European Union (EU) Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, led by Mr. David McAllister, paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

McAllister stated that the purpose of the visit was to “deepen our understanding of the situation in West Africa and strengthen our partnership with Nigeria.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio welcomed the delegation, describing Nigeria’s relationship with the EU as a strategic partnership. “Nigeria is committed to strengthening ties with the EU, highlighting areas of mutual interest, including security, trade, and governance,” Akpabio said.

The delegation included Ambassador Greta Mylott, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS; Miss Zelaya Zorko; Miss Mata Tamido; Sebastian Tankman; General Christophe Gomart; and Sebastian Buharo. Their tour of West Africa includes visits to Nigeria and Ghana.

During the meeting, Akpabio discussed challenges facing female representation in Nigeria’s parliament. “Women often vote for male candidates, making it difficult for female candidates to win elections,” he noted.

He added that the Senate is considering innovative measures, including constitutional amendments, to enhance women’s participation in governance, with support from groups such as the Black Women’s Forum.

McAllister reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s growth. “The EU is committed to supporting Nigeria’s development efforts and ensuring a stable, prosperous, and democratic Nigeria,” he said.

As part of their engagement, the delegation will also participate in the International Islamic Conference on Security and Governance in West Africa and the Sahel, scheduled for November 4–6, 2025, at the ECOWAS Commission.

Akpabio expressed optimism about the future of EU–Nigeria relations, affirming Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate with the EU in tackling shared challenges and promoting mutual progress.
