Faith Takes Flight: CAN breaks ground for Nigeria’s first Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrim Center in Abuja.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrim Center at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport attracted a distinguished gathering of leading Christian figures, government officials, and traditional rulers.


Organized under the auspices of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the event marked a significant milestone as the first ecumenical, interdenominational chapel and pilgrim center to be established at a Nigerian airport.
The facility is strategically designed to cater to the spiritual needs of travelers and pilgrims.
Former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, delivered the sole Bible reading at the ceremony, while the Chief Host was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Other notable dignitaries present included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Senator Binos Yaroe; the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who played a key role in securing the project site; former Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen; former SGF and CAN 50th Anniversary Committee Co-Chairman, Boss Mustapha; and CAN President, Daniel Okoh, who hosted the ceremony.
Also in attendance was the Methodist Archbishop of Abuja, Michael Akinwale, who delivered the exhortation.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, Stephen Adegbite, was represented by members of his management team.
Traditional rulers were led by the Rasheed Ladoja.
The Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrim Center is expected to be completed in October 2026, as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of CAN.
