Family Announces Burial of Philanthropist Mercy Nwankwo

The remains of business mogul, late Mrs. Mercy Nwankwo (née Obike) of Isieke-Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State will be laid to rest on August 21 at her husband’s country home in Isieke-Ibeku, Umuahia North LGA.

She passed away on March 29, 2026, at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital after a prolonged illness.
Mrs. Nwankwo, aged 65, was a devoted Christian and respected community leader who dedicated her life to the service of God and humanity. She was widely known for her philanthropy and unwavering support for the vulnerable and less privileged in society.
In a statement, her eldest son, Mr. Chukwudi Nwankwo, described his late mother as a peaceful, caring, joyful, friendly and humble woman who related freely with people regardless of their social status. He said she remained committed to the development of her community throughout her lifetime.
“I am consoled that my mother lived an exemplary and fulfilled life. We will certainly miss her, but she will always be remembered for her enduring legacies and the good virtues she instilled in us as her children. May the Almighty God grant eternal rest to her soul. To God be the glory. Adieu, mummy,” he said.
In her tribute, the deceased’s only surviving sister, Mrs. Kate Ihedinma Mbachu, described her as a rare gem with a heart of gold whose absence would be deeply felt by everyone who knew her. She described her death as devastating and prayed for God to grant the family, especially their aged mother, the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
Until her demise, late Mrs. Mercy Nwankwo was a committed member of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO). She is survived by her five children and her aged mother.
