FRSC SIGNS MOU WITH SIERRA LEONE ON CRASH REDUCTION

The Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC is to train and build the capacity of Sierra Leone’s Road Safety Authority as part of efforts to reduce road accidents and bring about effective traffic management in Sierra Leone.

The Corps Marshal of FRSC, Mallam Shehu Mohammed stated this while hosting the Executive Director Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, Mr James Bagie -Bio who is leading a delegation to Nigeria to sign a memorandum of understanding on safety of lives and property on the roads in the two countries.

The FRSC Corps Marshal maintained that the two countries would use their knowledge, resources and political will for capacity building and harmonization of safety standards, sharing of crash data and the implementation of best practices in Road Safety administration..

“Our joint efforts are fully aligned with global initiatives such as the United Nations decade of Action for Road Safety.”

“By working together,we aim to drastically reduce fatalities on our highways.

According to the FRSC Corps Marshal,, the agreement between the two countries aligns strongly with Nigeria’s foreign policy direction of President Bola Tinubu which emphasizes regional cooperation, strategic partnership

Earlier, the Executive Director Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority Mr James Bagie -Bio said the facility tour of FRSC centers in the last five days have equipped the team with innovation, technology, road safety operations and enforcement.

Mr James Bagie -Bio expressed optimism that the working together of the two countries would assist Sierra Leone towards achieving the global target of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030 in line with the SDG target 3.6.

He assured that the MoU will be domesticated and a focal person will also be appointed for quarterly progress report.

The Sierra Leonian Road Safety Executive Director emphasized that African Leaders must strengthen collaboration to reduce road accidents and secure highways for socio economic activities and the continent’s development.

In a brief remark, the Deputy High Commission of Sierra Leone in Nigeria, Retired Major General Dauda Alpha commended the long standing relations between Nigeria and Sierra Leone saying the MOU would enhance road transportation and increase economic activities in Sierra Leon.

Retired Major General Dauda Alpha assured that the foreign policy of Nigeria is providing opportunities for other African countries to share from its experience which is reducing the burden on the continent.

The President of Africa Association ofRoad Safety Lead Agencies and counter part of West Africa Road Safety Organization as well as the representative of the ECOWAS Commission joined online the signing of MOU between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
