Girl, Accomplices Allegedly Invade Abia Police Station, Assault Pregnant Officer and Others
UMUAHIA, Abia State – A shocking security breach and act of impunity has been reported at the Isialangwa Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force, drawing urgent calls for investigation from a human rights group.
The Abia State chapter of the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation has submitted an open petition to the State Commissioner of Police over an incident in which a group of civilians allegedly stormed the police station and physically attacked officers on duty.
According to the petition, the attack occurred last Thursday when “unidentified young men dressed in black on black stormed the Area Command headquarters in a tricycle and three motorcycles.” The assailants reportedly launched a violent assault on officers within the premises.
The petition details that a female Police Inspector, identified as Inspector Beatrice, was slapped three times, while a pregnant Corporal, Chioma Peter, was assaulted, leaving both women hospitalized.
Male officers were not spared. The Foundation noted: “Pc Chiemela Martins and Pc Peter Ugochukwu were given human bites, Pc Chiemela Martin was bitten on his neck while Peter Ugochukwu on his hand.”
Most disturbing, according to the petition, was the alleged release of the suspects without charge by the Second-in-Command (2IC) of the Area Command.
This development has raised concerns about accountability and justice within the command. The petition questioned: “How can civilians invade a police facility, attack uniformed officers, and be allowed to walk free without investigation?”
Ochiegbu Marvelous C, the State Director of the Foundation, stressed the wider implications of the incident, warning that it undermines the image and authority of the Nigeria Police Force while demoralizing officers.
He further asked: “If police officers can be assaulted in their own command without justice, then what hope do ordinary citizens have?”
The Foundation urged the Commissioner of Police to:
1. Launch a full-scale investigation into the attack.
2. Probe the conduct of the 2IC who allegedly authorized the suspects’ release.
3. Ensure the suspects are rearrested and prosecuted.
4. Sanction any officer found guilty of compromising justice.
“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done,” the petition concluded, calling for swift action to restore public confidence in the police.
As of the time of filing this report, the Abia State Police Command has not issued an official response to the allegations.
