Javan Emerges as a New Voice in Afrobeats’ Next Global Chapter
Afrobeats has evolved from a dominant Nigerian sound into one of Africa’s most powerful cultural exports, with artists from across the continent increasingly contributing to its growing global influence.
As established stars continue to take African music to international stages, a new generation of artists is emerging with a different responsibility: not simply to follow the path created by their predecessors, but to introduce fresh identities, experiences and perspectives into the genre.
Among the emerging voices attracting attention is Javan, born Ayodeji Chomini, whose musical identity reflects the increasingly multicultural character of contemporary African music.
Of both Nigerian and Ghanaian descent, Javan draws from a heritage that crosses national and cultural boundaries. Speaking about his Ghanaian identity, he often says, “My Ghana name na Akwasi.” That connection to Ghana, alongside his Nigerian roots, has become part of the cultural perspective shaping his artistry.
Raised around Yoruba and Warri influences, Javan grew up exposed to different traditions, languages and ways of expressing emotion. Rather than viewing these backgrounds as separate identities, he has incorporated them into the broader story he tells through music.
His approach is built around authenticity.
At a time when Afrobeats has become increasingly commercialised and globally competitive, Javan believes an artist’s ability to remain connected to personal experiences can be just as important as producing commercially successful records.
His release, “Money Szn,” demonstrated this philosophy. Released during the height of the Amapiano wave, the song connected with one of the continent’s most influential contemporary sounds while allowing Javan to maintain his own artistic direction.
For him, embracing popular sounds does not necessarily mean sacrificing individuality.
Beyond the rhythm and entertainment value of his music, Javan sees his work as a means of communicating emotions, ambition, perseverance and hope. His goal is to create records that listeners can connect with personally while also contributing to the evolving African sound.
That ambition extends beyond Nigeria.
Javan hopes to perform on major international stages and collaborate with artists across Africa, Europe and North America as he continues building his catalogue and expanding his audience.
His Nigerian-Ghanaian heritage also gives him a natural connection to the wider West African music conversation at a time when collaborations and cultural exchanges are becoming increasingly important to Afrobeats’ international growth.
As the genre enters another phase of global expansion, the next generation will be judged not only by the size of its audience but by the originality of the voices it introduces.
For Javan, the journey is still developing. But with a multicultural background, an emphasis on authenticity and ambitions that extend beyond borders, he represents the kind of emerging artist seeking to participate in—not simply observe—the next chapter of Afrobeats.
