Nollywood Mourns: Iconic Actor Olu Jacobs Dies at 84
Iconic Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR), popularly known worldwide as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His family confirmed his passing in a joint social media statement on Wednesday morning, September 16, 2026.
The statement, shared by his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and his son, Olusoji Jacobs, paid tribute to the late patriarch while appealing to bloggers, social media influencers and the public to respect the family’s privacy during their period of grief.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo. Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR). 11/07/1942 – 16/09/2026,” the family announcement read.
“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
Jacobs’ death comes just two months after he celebrated his 84th birthday on July 11, an occasion during which his wife described him as “THE LION OF LUFODO.”
Wednesday’s official announcement brings a solemn conclusion to a multi-decade career, following years during which the family and the Actors Guild of Nigeria repeatedly debunked false reports about his wellbeing. The family did not disclose the cause of death.
Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, Jacobs broke new ground as a Black actor on British television, appearing in classic series including The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, Angels, and The Professionals.
He also featured in major international films such as The Dogs of War, Pirates, and Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend.
Upon returning to Nigeria, he became one of the foundational figures of modern African theatre and Nollywood, earning a reputation for his resonant voice, majestic stage presence and deep commitment to the craft.
His contributions to national culture earned him the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
He also received major industry honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in 2007, the AMVCA Industry Merit Award in 2013, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, their children and grandchildren.
