Kirawa: Ndume Commends Tinubu, COAS, CDS for Swift Military Intervention
By our Correspondent
Former Leader of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume, has commended the Nigerian Army for its prompt response in restoring normalcy to Kirawa, a border town in Borno State.
Residents of the community had recently fled into neighbouring Cameroon after Boko Haram militants overran the area, burning the district head’s palace, a military barracks, and several homes.
However, the insurgents were repelled after the military deployed reinforcements, leading to the restoration of calm as residents began returning home following the deployment of additional troops.
In a statement on Wednesday, the lawmaker representing Borno South praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-General Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for their swift action, particularly the deployment of the 153 Task Force Battalion to the community.
Senator Ndume noted that the military’s rapid intervention prevented what could have been greater destruction by the insurgents. He appealed to the authorities to maintain a permanent military presence in Kirawa, given its strategic location as a border town.
He further called for continued collaboration between the Nigerian military and their Cameroonian counterparts to enhance border security.
“The courage and resilience displayed by our military remain commendable. I have always acknowledged that our military is overstretched, yet I am impressed with their successes despite the challenges,” Ndume said.
The senator also urged residents of Kirawa to remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel to ensure the safety of their community.
“I sympathize with the people of Kirawa who have borne the brunt of insurgent attacks. My appeal is for them to stay alert and share useful information with the military to secure their community,” he added.
Ndume commended Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, for his efforts in resettling displaced persons and encouraging resilience among the people. He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to restoring peace in the North-East region.
“Security of lives and property is the foremost responsibility of any government. The present administration has not failed in fulfilling this constitutional mandate to Nigerians,” the lawmaker stated.
