Mama Kalu: A Matriarch, Not A Myth

I understand why that WhatsApp message is moving around. A president visiting an elder, photos online, and suddenly people start attaching spiritual stories to it.

But when we slow down and look at the facts about the woman in the video, President Tinubu’s visit to Elder Chief Mrs.

First, who is she really? Her name is Elder Chief Mrs. Eunice Uzor Kalu. She is the matriarch of the Uzor Kalu family and the mother of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu who represents Abia North. On Saturday, July 4, 2026, she was celebrated as she clocked 79. That was marked with a big gathering in Abuja attended by senators, ministers, and well-wishers including President Tinubu who came to pay homage.

The viral claim says “she’s younger than Orji.” That doesn’t line up with public records. Orji Uzor Kalu was born on April 21, 1960 to the family of Mazi Johnson Uzor Kalu and Mrs. Eunice Uzor Kalu. If she turned 79 in July 2026, that puts her birth year around 1947. She is his mother, not his contemporary.

The second claim is “she’s half spirit half human.” There is no record, interview, or statement from the Kalu family, from Mama herself, or from any credible source that supports that. What is on record is that she is called “Odi Uko Na Mba” and described by her son and others as a woman of substance with passion for humanity.

She is President of Reality Organisation Worldwide, a philanthropic platform through which she has built a large followership because of her commitment to service. In Abia politics she is known as “Mother Excellency,” a grassroots mobilizer who was active long before her son became governor.

Her influence was even credited as vital in helping Orji Kalu and other politicians attain political stardom. People describe her life as one of resilience, industry, and service to God and humanity. Those are human virtues, not mystical ones.

It is also not true that “every Nigerian president that meets her bows before her including OBJ.” Respect for elders is a core Igbo and Nigerian value. When President Tinubu visited her in July 2026, it was in the context of celebrating her 79th birthday, a public event where leaders from across party lines came to honour an elder. Senators like Abaribe, Jarigbe, Ned Nwoko, Dino Melaye and ministers were also present. That is protocol, politics, and culture. To reduce it to “bowing because she is spirit” ignores the fact that Nigerian leaders routinely visit and celebrate nonagenarians, centenarians, and matriarchs in their communities. It is respect, not worship.

The line about “when their seats are too hot, they will visit her” sounds dramatic, but the record shows something simpler. Mama Kalu has been a political force in Abia for decades. She campaigned for her son and used her relationships with political heavyweights.

In 2022 Orji Kalu himself praised her for her philanthropic gestures and for being a rallying point for women beyond her community. When leaders visit her, they are visiting a respected elder, a mother of a serving senator and former governor, and a woman who has contributed to community development. That is how Nigerian politics works. You pay homage to elders, you seek blessings, you acknowledge those who paved the way.

On faith, you are right to bring up prayer. The Bible says at the mention of Jesus every knee will bow. And Nigerians are a praying people. But we don’t need to invent spirits to explain why a president would visit a 79-year-old mother. The family itself frames her life in Christian terms. Relatives have likened her to Ruth and Hannah in the Bible because of her love for women and humanity. Orji Kalu, in his birthday message, thanked God for giving him a good, dependable and supportive mother. That is the language her own children use.

So let’s counter the viral narrative with what we actually know. Elder Chief Mrs. Eunice Uzor Kalu is 79 years old as of July 2026. She is the mother of Orji Uzor Kalu, born 1960. She is a philanthropist, president of Reality Organisation Worldwide, and a grassroots political mobilizer in Abia. She is respected across party lines, which is why people like President Tinubu, ministers, and senators showed up for her birthday. There is no evidence she is “half spirit,” no evidence she is younger than her son, and no evidence that presidents bow to her for mystical reasons.

Nigeria has enough real battles without inventing new ones. The real story here is about honouring elders, about a mother who raised children who serve, and about a culture where leaders still visit the aged. If we want to pray like Esther, we can pray for wisdom for our leaders, for peace in Abia, and for truth to drown out rumors. God remains above all principalities, and He also commands us to honour our father and mother. That is what that visit was: honour.
