Man Seeks Divorce, Says wife might kill him from excessive beating

Adekola Ayodele, a mechanic, has brought his marital woes before the Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan, petitioning for divorce citing relentless physical abuse by his wife, Bolanle.
Ayodele recounted, “I have not known peace since marrying my wife. Bolanle shows me no respect, even resorting to physical violence. Her brother has even been enlisted to assault me without cause. Moreover, she nearly mutilated me in our last altercation, attempting to sever my private parts.”
Adding to his grievances, Ayodele explained, “Bolanle went as far as having me wrongfully arrested. It’s clear she aims to dominate and control me.”
Seeking solace from the court, Ayodele pleaded for custody of their two children and a restraining order against his wife.
In her defense, Bolanle, a trader, maintained silence on most accusations, citing self-defense in the face of Ayodele’s aggression. She disclosed, “Our last confrontation stemmed from a disagreement over our children’s schooling. Despite numerous interventions from both our families, reconciliation has proved futile.”
President of the court, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, delivered a verdict dismissing Ayodele’s claim of a valid traditional marriage, pointing out his inability to recall the bride price he allegedly paid, rendering the marriage void.
Akintayo clarified, “Without evidence of bride price payment, there is no legal marriage to dissolve.”
Nonetheless, recognizing the irreparable breakdown of their union, Akintayo sanctioned their separation, issuing a restraining order against Bolanle to prevent further harassment or interference in Ayodele’s life.
