Mdzough U Tiv Condemns Killing of Professor Gabriel Nyityo, Demands Thorough Investigation
From Dooshima Terkura, Makurdi
The umbrella socio cultural organization of the Tiv people, Mdzough U Tiv (MUT) has condemned the gruesome murder of Professor Gabriel Nyityo, a lecturer at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, and his brother, describing the incident as shocking and unacceptable.
Professor Nyityo and his younger brother were reportedly killed by yet-to-be-identified assailants in the early hours of Wednesday at their residence in the Adaka area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
The President General MUT Worldwide, Air Commodore Agbecha Titus (rtd), in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and extended condolences to the bereaved family, the university community and the entire Tiv nation.
The new leader of Mdzough U Tiv disclosed that he had personally paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased in Makurdi, where he prayed for God to grant the victims eternal rest and comfort those they left behind.
He urged members of the Tiv nation and the university community to remain strong and seek solace in God during the difficult period, while praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
Agbecha, who recently succeeded Chief Iorbee Ihagh (rtd.) as President General of Mdzough U Tiv Worldwide, said the socio-cultural organisation was deeply concerned about the circumstances surrounding the killings and would work with relevant stakeholders to ensure justice is served.
He said “As President General of Mdzough U Tiv and Chairman of the three socio-cultural organisations in Benue State, I assure you of our commitment to get to the root cause of the problem.”
He called on security agencies to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive steps towards unraveling the circumstances that led to the deaths of the professor and his brother.
“To the security agencies, this is time for action, not just words. We appeal for appropriate steps to interrogate the suspect in the police custody.”
While expressing confidence in the ability of security agencies to handle the matter professionally, Agbecha urged residents of Benue State to remain calm and law-abiding pending the outcome of the Police investigations.
