Minister Mourns Chief Audu Ogbeh, Hails His Legacy of Service, Agriculture, and National Development
Chief Audu Innocent Ogbeh, who passed away at the weekend at the age of 78, was celebrated as a distinguished Nigerian whose life was marked by unwavering service, dedication to peace, and commitment to the nation’s growth and development.
This was contained in a statement signed by Senator Dr.
Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, CON (Baraden Borgu), Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security.According to the statement,
> “He was a polyglot whose professional journey spanned teaching, playwriting, politics, governance, and farming.”
Chief Ogbeh’s political career saw him serve as Minister of Communications and later Minister of Steel Development from 1982 to 1983 during the Second Republic under President Shehu Shagari. However, it was during his tenure as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (2015–2019) that he fully embraced his passion for farming—rooted in his family background and lifelong practice.
For years, Ogbeh invested in cashew plantations, poultry, rice milling, and other ventures, while offering consultancy services to state governments and private individuals in establishing viable agricultural projects. His vast practical knowledge of farming shaped his efforts as Minister to accelerate Nigeria’s pursuit of food sovereignty.
Despite his wealth of experience, Chief Ogbeh chose not to discard the agricultural agenda of his predecessor. Instead, he refined and built upon it, implementing a revitalised strategy with vigour and dedication. Notably, he was instrumental in launching The Green Alternative: Agriculture Promotion Policy (2016–2020), which prioritised mechanisation in agriculture.
The Minister further noted:
> “When we assumed office as Ministers two years ago, we drew inspiration from the landmark efforts of our predecessors, including Chief Audu Ogbeh, in formulating the Action Plan and Monitoring Framework for the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (NATIP 2022–2027). This plan addresses critical issues in the food supply chain—from agricultural inputs and technology to extension services and post-harvest losses—aiming for sustainable food systems and economic growth.”
Senator Abdullahi expressed deep grief over Ogbeh’s passing, describing him as a man of candour and formidable ideas whose contributions to national progress will be dearly missed.
> “We pray that the Almighty grants Chief Audu Ogbeh eternal rest and comforts his family, relatives, friends, and associates across the world,” the statement concluded.
