Monday Sit-at-Home: Anambra Govt Threatens Salary Forfeiture for Defaulting Workers
Concerned over the persistent observance of sit-at-home every Monday by civil servants in Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has issued a directive warning teachers and non-teaching staff to report to work or risk forfeiture of their salaries.
The warning was conveyed by the Board Secretary of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Hon.
According to her, the directive—titled “Executive Order on the Termination of Monday Sit-at-Home”—was issued following the state executive retreat held on January 21, 2026, and presided over by Governor Soludo.
The order stated in part:
“Sequel to the state executive retreat held on 21st January 2026 and presided over by His Excellency, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, I am directed to inform you that the Anambra State Government has resolved that the prolonged Monday sit-at-home has been abolished with immediate effect.
“By this directive, any staff, both teaching and non-teaching, who fails to report to school or office on Mondays will be entitled to only 20 per cent of their salary or forfeit it entirely.
“You are to bring the contents of this letter to the attention of all staff under your supervision and ensure total compliance.”
The directive was copied to permanent board members, officers in charge of the 21 local government education authorities, zonal directors, and all departmental directors at the ASUBEB headquarters in Awka, the state capital.
It was gathered that the announcement has generated palpable fear among civil servants across the state. Some workers reportedly expressed concern that enforcement of the directive should begin with members of the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Speaking anonymously, a civil servant said workers lacked adequate protection in the event of security threats, adding that the government should provide security escorts if it insists on full compliance with the Monday resumption order.
