The Nasarawa State Government has warned that it may shut down the Lafia Modern Abattoir due to its poor sanitary condition.

The State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr.

Margaret Elayo, issued the warning while speaking with journalists shortly after the August sanitation exercise in Lafia, the state capital.

Dr. Elayo, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Hussaini Babayi, expressed displeasure at the unhygienic state of the abattoir, stressing that the government would not condone any form of unclean practices that endanger public health.

She explained that the ministry will closely monitor activities at the facility to ensure compliance with sanitation laws, noting that poor hygiene poses a serious threat to the wellbeing of citizens.

“The ministry will not leave any stone unturned in ensuring the cleanliness of abattoirs in line with the state’s sanitation laws,” the Commissioner emphasized.

Describing abattoirs as sensitive environments, Dr. Elayo underscored the importance of educating workers on the health implications of poor hygiene. She disclosed that the ministry would begin regular and unscheduled visits to all abattoirs across the state to enforce compliance.
