Nasarawa Shuts Market Over Filthy Condition, Urges Strict Sanitary Measures
By David Odama
The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Margaret Elayo, has ordered the closure of the Lafia Modern Market in the state capital due to its deplorable sanitary condition.
Dr. Elayo issued the directive during an on-the-spot inspection of the market on Tuesday morning, which took place under tight security supervision.
According to the commissioner, the action became necessary to restore cleanliness and enforce strict adherence to environmental sanitation laws. She noted that traders had repeatedly ignored previous warnings and directives to improve hygiene and maintain a clean market environment.
Dr. Elayo emphasized that the market would remain closed until concrete and corrective measures were taken to address the situation. She also urged the market leadership to mobilize traders to thoroughly clean and sanitize the premises to make it suitable for business activities once again.
Speaking to our correspondent, a textile trader, Musa Baka, expressed concern over the market closure, lamenting that it had disrupted their means of livelihood. He appealed to the market authorities to cooperate with the government in ensuring cleanliness, order, and public safety.
