Niger Detention Deaths: Alake Seeks Transparent Investigation
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has deployed a team of experts to Niger State to investigate the deaths of persons detained after being arrested over alleged illegal mining activities.
Alake, in a condolence message to the Niger State Government and people, expressed shock and sadness over the incident, describing the loss of lives as a painful tragedy.
The Minister said the fact-finding team was deployed to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine what led to the incident.
According to him, the team will work alongside other investigators already examining the matter and submit a comprehensive report.
Alake also expressed support for Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s decision to declare a period of mourning and establish an investigative framework.
He emphasised the importance of a thorough, transparent and independent investigation to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in detention and correctional facilities.
The Minister noted that the development was particularly concerning because the deceased were reportedly arrested on suspicion of involvement in illegal mining activities.
He expressed sympathy to the affected families and prayed for comfort for the bereaved and eternal rest for the departed.
Alake also commiserated with Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the bereaved families and communities affected by the incident.
