Nigeria Faces Fresh Flood Risk as 2,000 Communities Are Listed

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, alongside those in over 2,000 communities across 30 states of the federation, may witness flooding within the next two weeks.
The affected locations are likely to experience a combination of elevated antecedent soil moisture, rainfall, rapid surface runoff, drainage surcharge and rising river levels, which may lead to flooding within the prediction period.
A statement by the Director, Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Mr. Usman Bokani, explained that Akwa Ibom, Delta, Kogi, Benue, Rivers, Bayelsa and Ebonyi states might be critical areas during the forecast period, while Adamawa, Kwara, Taraba and Kebbi are categorised as high-risk locations.
Mr. Bokani, however, said some communities in Borno, FCT, Plateau, Nasarawa and Yobe states would experience moderate flooding during the rainfall. He called on residents of the affected states to sustain preventive measures, comply with evacuation instructions, keep children away from floodwater, avoid driving or walking through flowing water, and disconnect electricity where necessary.
