Traders in Onitsha, Anambra State, have appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for protection and an investigation into alleged harassment and threats arising from a dispute over the management of a market plaza.

The traders, operating under the Association of Modebeb Traders, said the dispute had lasted for about two years, affecting their businesses and livelihoods.

Speaking on behalf of the traders in Abuja, Chief Okey Muojekwu alleged that the plaza where they operated was demolished in 2025, affecting four buildings and several businesses.

He further alleged that some property documents had been altered to change the ownership of the affected buildings, calling for an investigation to establish their rightful ownership.

Muojekwu also alleged that he was recently attacked and stabbed by suspected thugs, adding that the incident had been reported to the police.

The Chairman of the market association, Mr Tochukwu Umeh, said the dispute was also linked to disagreements over the removal of some market leaders by the Anambra State Government.

A patron of the market, Mr Onyeka Oguejiofor, alleged that some traders had been threatened with eviction and that previous complaints to security agencies and government authorities had not produced a lasting solution.

The traders appealed to the police and relevant authorities to investigate the allegations, protect their members and help resolve the dispute peacefully.
They said their primary concern was to ensure the safety of traders and enable them to return to normal business activities.
