Okpebholo alleges Russia-based Nigerian sponsored Edo protest
By Ugbede James Ankpa
Monday Okpebholo, governor of Edo State, has alleged that a Nigerian resident in Russia sponsored the recent protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
Residents of Ekpoma and surrounding communities had on Saturday taken to the streets to protest the rising cases of kidnapping in the area.
However, the demonstration reportedly turned violent, with a military personnel allegedly shooting and injuring a 32-year-old protester identified as Osagie Abraham.
Following the incident, 52 protesters were arraigned before a high court in Edo State after being arrested by the police.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, Governor Okpebholo described the protest as a “well-organised riot” allegedly funded by a Nigerian living in Russia and other individuals based outside the country.
The governor stated that some of the suspects were apprehended while allegedly on their way to vandalise public and private property, while others were identified through a viral video that captured acts of arson during the protest.
Okpebholo maintained that the arrests were carried out based on “clear evidence,” including video footage showing violence and destruction. He stressed that those currently in custody were involved in rioting and not peaceful protest.
The governor also clarified that the incident had no connection with students or the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
He assured residents that the security situation in Ekpoma is under control, adding that peace and normalcy are gradually being restored to the area.
Okpebholo further urged members of the public to disregard fake videos and unverified reports circulating on social media, and encouraged residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities.
