Opening Remarks
The session began with the interviewer acknowledging Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as a prominent leader from Igboland, referencing a local saying about progress and resilience.
On the occasion of his birthday, the Senate Press Corps engaged him on key national issues. On Allegations Against APC and INEC
Responding to claims by the ADC that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are working to suppress opposition, Kalu dismissed the allegations.
He stated that APC has no control over INEC, emphasizing that the electoral body is independent and led by a respected legal scholar. He described such claims as frivolous and urged Nigerians to take democratic institutions more seriously.
Kalu also clarified that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not coerce politicians into joining the APC, noting that membership decisions are based on personal choice and negotiations.
On speculation about zoning the Senate Presidency to the South-East in 2027, he said he was unaware of any such arrangement, stressing that such decisions rest with party leadership. He added that he is not lobbying for any position but would accept any responsibility assigned by the party.
On Claims by 1999 Governors
Addressing concerns raised by some former governors from the 1999 set about not being carried along, Kalu downplayed the issue. He noted that they are not a political party and maintain a cordial relationship with the President, adding that recent meetings have taken place without any major disagreements.
On Regional Development Under Buhari and Tinubu
Kalu rejected claims that the South-East was neglected under former President Muhammadu Buhari. He stated that both Buhari and Tinubu have contributed to national development in their own ways.
According to him, the South-East has received its fair share of development, possibly even more under the current administration, while still acknowledging Buhari’s contributions.
On Economic Reforms and 2027 Elections
Speaking on the economy, Kalu said reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration are yielding positive results, particularly at the macroeconomic level, attracting investors from countries such as Australia, China, and the United States.
He admitted that challenges persist at the grassroots level due to insecurity and sabotage but stressed that reforms take time, citing examples like Singapore, Indonesia, and China.
On the 2027 elections, Kalu expressed confidence in Tinubu’s chances, stating that the President is not currently in active political competition. He described the opposition as weak and predicted that Tinubu would win a free and fair election.
He further described the APC as a rapidly expanding party, likening it to a “moving train,” and said its strength would continue to grow if internal management is handled effectively.
