Jimoh Ibrahim Assumes Office as Nigeria’s UN Envoy After Presenting Credentials
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has formally presented his letters of credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, officially taking up his role at the global body.
The presentation ceremony took place on Monday at the United Nations Headquarters, marking the completion of the diplomatic protocol required for his full accreditation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed the development, describing it as a key step in Nigeria’s international engagement.
With the formal submission, Ibrahim is now authorised to represent Nigeria in all official capacities at the United Nations.
His responsibilities include advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities and participating in deliberations on global issues such as security, development, and international cooperation.
A letter of credence is an official document issued by a country’s head of state, empowering an ambassador to act on behalf of their nation. Its presentation signifies the envoy’s formal recognition by the host institution.
Ibrahim’s appointment was announced in March 2026 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a wider deployment of 65 ambassadors to Nigerian missions abroad, comprising both career diplomats and political appointees.
Among other notable postings were Femi Fani-Kayode to Germany, Isaac Adewole to Canada, and Olufemi Pedro to Australia.
Before his diplomatic assignment, Ibrahim represented Ondo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly following his election in 2023. His nomination came after the Senate confirmed ambassadorial nominees in December 2025.
As Nigeria’s chief envoy to the UN, he is expected to engage with member states and the Secretary-General to promote the country’s interests on key global platforms.
According to Ebienfa, the presentation of credentials signifies that Ibrahim has now formally begun his duties at the United Nations.
