Airtel Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of its airtime and data borrowing services, which previously allowed eligible prepaid subscribers to access credit and repay upon their next recharge.

The telecom company disclosed on Friday that the move is part of ongoing efforts to align its operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements within Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

In a statement, the Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, explained that the decision reflects necessary adjustments to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Despite the suspension, Airtel assured customers that regular airtime and data purchase options remain fully functional, stressing that the development will not affect overall service delivery or network performance.
The Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the action as both necessary and responsible, emphasizing the company’s commitment to transparency, consumer protection, and continued innovation in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
He added that the temporary halt would enable the company to better align with current regulatory expectations while maintaining high-quality service for subscribers.
Airtel also stated that updates on the status of the suspended credit services will be communicated in due course.
The development comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of digital lending and credit-based telecom services, prompting operators to reassess and adjust their offerings accordingly.
