Senator Kawu Sumaila: Taking Action, Delivering Peace in Kano South
The quintessential Distinguished Senator Suleiman A. Kawu Sumaila, OFR, PhD, demonstrated his commitment to the people of Kano South Senatorial District immediately after his election by taking decisive steps to address security challenges confronting the district.
Shortly after his election as Senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Senator Kawu Sumaila convened a stakeholders’ meeting at Guest Pride Hotel, Kano, to deliberate on the security challenges facing the senatorial district.
The meeting was attended by elected members of the National and State Assemblies, Chairmen of the Local Government Areas in the district, traditional rulers, heads of security formations, and leaders of voluntary organisations.
The objective was to obtain firsthand information on the security situation in the district. Senator Kawu Sumaila emphasised that the time to act and be decisive was then.

The major resolutions reached at the meeting included the sustenance of the stakeholders’ meeting, ensuring that the governments of Kano and Bauchi States worked together to achieve lasting peace in the area, and the formation of a task force team.

Other resolutions included the immediate reporting of informants, placing areas identified as hotspots for kidnappers under watertight security, and putting a team of lawyers on standby.

The Distinguished Senator also supported security formations with working materials and financial assistance.
These and other measures can be said to be among the reasons why the senatorial district remains relatively peaceful.
