Former Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, Mr. Femi Soneye, has appealed to the Federal Government to introduce targeted incentives, including tax holidays and import duty waivers, to help reposition the Nigerian media industry for sustainability.

Soneye made the call in Abuja on Tuesday shortly after he was honoured with the Excellence in Corporate Communications Award by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council.

He noted that despite its vibrancy, the Nigerian media is weighed down by financial, political, legal, and technological hurdles that limit its performance.

“Our media remains one of the most vibrant in Africa, yet systemic challenges weaken its effectiveness. Government intervention through tax incentives and import duty relief on newsprint, broadcast equipment, and digital tools can significantly ease these burdens,” Soneye stressed.

Beyond fiscal support, he urged the establishment of a media development fund to encourage investigative reporting, sustain community radio, and drive newsroom innovation, drawing lessons from similar initiatives in South Africa, the U.S., and Canada.

Presenting the award, NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, hailed Soneye as a consummate professional who has consistently advanced the cause of journalists nationwide.

“You have stood with journalists both as a practitioner and as a media owner. Your advocacy for welfare, training, and ethical journalism has distinguished you as an icon in this field,” Ike said.

She added that the council recognised Soneye’s commitment to balanced reporting and his support for the welfare of NUJ members.
