WAPP Chairman Pushes Urgent Reforms to Strengthen West Africa’s Power Market
The Chairman of the Executive Board of the West African Power Pool (WAPP), Engr. (Dr.) Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, has called on member states to accelerate key reforms aimed at deepening the region’s electricity market and improving governance across the power sector.
Abdulaziz made the call at the 67th Executive Board meeting of WAPP held in Lomé, Togo on May 4, 2026, where he described the organisation’s ongoing restructuring process as critical to meeting the demands of a rapidly expanding regional electricity network.
According to him, the growth of cross-border electricity trade within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region requires stronger institutional frameworks that are more transparent, efficient, and responsive to the needs of member countries.
He stressed that reinforcing governance systems, boosting operational efficiency, and ensuring accountability are essential to sustaining progress in the regional power sector.
