Francophone Ambassadors Celebrate La Francophonie Day, Strengthen Ties with Nigeria on Climate Action
By Iyojo Ameh
In a vibrant celebration of cultural unity and international cooperation, Francophone ambassadors in Nigeria came together to mark La Francophonie International Day, with a strong focus on climate change awareness and environmental preservation.
Although La Francophonie Day is traditionally celebrated in March, this year’s event was moved to April to allow broader participation and deeper engagement. Speaking at the event, the Bulgarian Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Yanko Yordanov, who currently serves as Groupe des Ambassadeurs Francophones, GAF President spoke about the significance of the gathering.
He stated that, “This celebration reflects the spirit of La Francophonie — uniting French-speaking countries to celebrate our diversity, shared values, and common mission. Nigeria is a key partner with whom we share not only cultural ties but also common concerns, especially regarding climate change.”

The event emphasized themes such as afforestation, maintaining clean environments, and building stronger partnerships to combat the effects of climate change. The Ambassador stressed that La Francophonie is committed to raising awareness and working cooperatively with countries like Nigeria to mitigate the impacts of global warming and promote sustainable living.

Reflecting on his two-year tenure as the chair of the Francophone ambassadors’ group in Nigeria, the Ambassador expressed pride in the progress made. “We have successfully made La Francophonie more visible, better understood, and more popular in Nigeria. Our group of over 25 ambassadors works not only to promote Francophone culture but also to highlight Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage abroad.”

He noted that collaboration extends beyond cultural exchange, encompassing trade, investment, and political relations. “Our partnership with Nigeria is rooted in shared values—promoting humanity, democracy, and the rule of law,” he added.
The Ambassador concluded by reaffirming the commitment of the Francophone community to working closely with Nigeria on global challenges, particularly climate change, which he described as a universal threat requiring collective action.

This year’s celebration sponsored by the Groupe des Ambassadeurs Francophones (GAF) in Nigeria, comprising about 20 member countries, featured a vibrant gastronomic and cultural fair, offering visitors a taste of the rich and diverse cultures of Francophone nations through food, music, dance, games, and presentations by students and teachers of the French language. The cultural showcase also included a tribute to Nigeria’s own heritage.
