South Korean Court Hands Five-Year Jail Term to Former President Yoon Over Obstruction Charges
A South Korean court on Friday sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to five years in prison over charges that include obstructing efforts to arrest him following his failed attempt to impose martial law.
The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Yoon deliberately blocked authorities from executing an arrest warrant linked to his declaration of martial law in December 2024, according to a live broadcast of the judgment.
The court also found the former president guilty of additional offences, including fabricating official documents and failing to follow the legal procedures required for declaring martial law.
This judgment marks the first court ruling connected to the criminal cases arising from Yoon’s unsuccessful martial law bid.
Yoon retains the right to appeal the decision.
