TCN Restores Power Supply to Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers After Repairing Faulty Transmission Lines
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored full electricity supply to parts of Imo, Bayelsa and Rivers states following the successful repair and re-energisation of the Alaoji–Owerri 132kV Transmission Lines 1 and 2.
TCN disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, noting that the restoration followed the completion of emergency repairs on faults that caused both transmission lines to trip.
According to the company, Transmission Line 1 was energised at 7:05 p.m., while Line 2 was restored at 7:06 p.m. on June 24, 2026, bringing the Alaoji–Owerri transmission corridor back to full operational capacity.
The outage, which occurred on June 23, affected electricity supply to parts of Imo State, Bayelsa State and sections of Rivers State, including Yenagoa and Ahoada.
TCN said its maintenance crew immediately mobilised to the fault location after the incident and commenced repair works to restore supply as quickly as possible.
The company explained that repairs on Line 1 were completed first, enabling partial restoration of bulk electricity supply to the affected areas on the same day.
However, engineers were later required to temporarily shut down Line 1 to safely complete repairs on Line 2.
TCN noted that the precautionary measure became necessary because of the close proximity of the two high-voltage transmission lines, which could create electromagnetic induction and endanger maintenance personnel working on the faulted line.
“To facilitate the safe repair of Line 2, it became necessary to temporarily de-energise Line 1. This was because the close proximity of the two high-voltage transmission lines could induce electromagnetic induction on the faulty line when the adjacent line remained energised, thereby posing a safety risk to TCN’s maintenance engineers,” the statement said.
The company added that the temporary shutdown was approved by the Nigerian Independent System Operator and carried out with the concurrence of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC).
TCN said the arrangement created a safe working environment that enabled engineers to complete repairs and restore both lines successfully.
“With the successful restoration of both transmission lines, the Alaoji–Owerri transmission corridor is now fully operational. EEDC and PHEDC can now offtake full load for onward distribution to their customers,” the company stated.
The transmission company expressed appreciation to consumers affected by the outage for their patience and understanding during the repair period.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a reliable and efficient transmission network to support stable electricity supply across the country.
The restoration is expected to improve power supply stability in the affected states and provide relief to households, businesses and institutions that experienced disruptions during the outage.
