The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Federal Capital Territory chapter, has called for increased awareness, improved access to sanitary products, and an end to the stigma surrounding menstruation as part of activities marking the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

In a statement signed by the Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Bassey Ita-Ikpang, the association said menstrual health remains a major issue affecting the dignity, confidence, education, and overall well-being of millions of women and girls, particularly those in underserved communities.

The group stressed that no girl should be forced to miss school, suffer discrimination, or feel ashamed because of a natural biological process.

According to NAWOJ FCT, menstrual hygiene should be treated not only as a health issue but also as a matter of human rights, gender equality, and social inclusion.

The association urged governments, schools, healthcare institutions, development partners, and community leaders to prioritise menstrual health education and ensure that sanitary products are affordable and accessible to all women and girls.

“As women journalists and advocates, we remain committed to using the media as a tool to amplify conversations around menstrual hygiene, break harmful cultural taboos, and promote policies that protect the health and dignity of women and girls,” the statement read.
