By our Correspondent
The President of the Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria (ACHPN), Comrade Kabir Yahaya Ahmed, has congratulated Nigerians, particularly members of the Association, on their successful transition into the year 2026.
In his New Year message, Comrade Kabir Ahmed described the outgoing year as one of the most challenging periods for the nation and its citizens. He, however, expressed optimism that with God’s guidance and collective commitment, 2026 would be far better than previous years for Nigeria.
The ACHPN President stressed the need for all Nigerians, especially the political class, to remain committed to the ideals and aspirations of the nation’s founding fathers in order to reposition the country for greatness in 2026.
He used the occasion to call for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s Primary Healthcare System in the new year, noting that strengthening primary healthcare is critical to improving the overall wellbeing of Nigerians across the country.
Comrade Kabir Ahmed also emphasized the urgent need for increased recruitment of community health practitioners to address the manpower deficit in primary healthcare centres nationwide.
Expressing concern over the welfare of community health practitioners, particularly those deployed to rural areas, he called for improved remuneration and better welfare packages in 2026 to boost morale, productivity, and effective healthcare service delivery.
He further advocated the upgrade of primary healthcare centres through the provision of essential amenities such as electricity, water supply, consumables, and other facilities required for efficient primary healthcare delivery.
Describing healthcare delivery as fundamental to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the ACHPN National President urged governments at all levels to increase budgetary allocations to the health sector, especially to curb child and maternal mortality in the country.
Comrade Kabir Yahaya Ahmed also appealed to state commissioners who restrict community health practitioners from practicing in state health facilities to reconsider their stance, noting that such actions run contrary to Nigeria’s efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage.
He reaffirmed that ACHPN would continue to complement government efforts aimed at repositioning the nation’s primary healthcare sector.
While wishing Nigerians, particularly ACHPN members, a happy and prosperous New Year, Comrade Kabir Ahmed prayed for God’s blessings, good health, and the grace to witness many more fulfilled years.
