2026: Akpabio Expresses Optimism, Reaffirms Senate’s Commitment to National Stability and Progress
The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has expressed optimism that the year 2026 will usher in renewed hope and sustained national advancement, driven by institutional responsibility, legislative commitment, and collective national resolve.
In his New Year message, signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Senator Akpabio acknowledged the resilience of Nigerians and emphasized the critical role of the National Assembly—particularly the Senate—in maintaining democratic stability, promoting accountability, and supporting national development.
“As we step into the year 2026, I extend my heartfelt goodwill to Nigerians and wish everyone a peaceful and rewarding year. I commend the resilience, patience, and civic responsibility consistently demonstrated by our people, even in difficult circumstances,” the Senate President stated.
He noted that as the Executive arm continues the implementation of its policies and programmes, the National Assembly remains resolute in carrying out its constitutional duties of legislation, representation, and oversight, to ensure governance outcomes align with the expectations and aspirations of Nigerians.
“The Senate and the National Assembly as a whole will continue to perform their responsibilities diligently—offering legislative support where needed, providing oversight where necessary, and always acting in the best interests of national unity, economic stability, and social justice,” he said.
Senator Akpabio expressed guarded optimism that ongoing initiatives aimed at tackling insecurity, economic challenges, infrastructure deficits, and youth unemployment would produce more tangible outcomes in the coming year. He stressed that lasting development is anchored on strong institutions rather than individual personalities.
“Our democracy grows stronger when institutions function effectively and leaders are held accountable. The National Assembly will remain committed to strengthening these institutions and ensuring that public policies are people-focused and future-oriented,” he added.
As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Senate President cautioned Nigerians against divisive politics and misleading narratives that portray individuals as sole saviours.
“With increased political engagements, Nigerians must exercise discernment. Experience has shown that those who claim exclusive solutions often worsen divisions instead of fostering unity. Democracy flourishes through ideas, responsibility, and respect for national cohesion—not through inflammatory rhetoric or deception,” he warned.
He further urged political actors to conduct themselves with moderation and a strong sense of national responsibility, assuring that the Senate would continue to uphold democratic values, parliamentary discipline, and the rule of law.
“The National Assembly remains steadfast in its commitment to constructive collaboration with the Executive, the Judiciary, and other stakeholders to build a more united, fair, and prosperous Nigeria—where leadership is measured by service and institutions endure beyond individuals,” he said.
In conclusion, Senator Akpabio called on Nigerians to remain actively engaged, vigilant, and optimistic in the year ahead.
“I encourage Nigerians to continue supporting our democratic institutions and to work together in the pursuit of peace, equity, and national development,” he stated.
“On behalf of my family, my constituents, the Senate, and the entire National Assembly, I wish all Nigerians a peaceful celebration and a prosperous 2026.”
