In Nigeria’s presidential system, legislators are tasked with three primary responsibilities—lawmaking, representation, and oversight. Senator Isah Jibrin (Echocho), representing Kogi East Senatorial District, exemplifies how these roles can be effectively combined with social intervention to deliver meaningful impact.

Senator Echocho has consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of his mandate by making his presence felt not only in the Senate chambers but also across the nine local government areas of Kogi East. His ability to balance core legislative functions with constituency-based development has made him a standout among his peers.

Legislative Milestones

At the National Assembly, Echocho has been a respected and vocal contributor to debates. His legislative efforts include sponsoring a range of impactful bills such as:

Bill to convert Kogi State College of Education, Ankpa to a Federal University of Education

Bill to establish the Federal Eye Centre at Holey Memorial Hospital, Ochadamu (Ofu LGA)

Bill to create the Nigeria Cashew Crop Processing Agency and the National Cashew Production and Research Institute, Idah

Orthopaedic Hospitals Management Board (Amendment) Bill

Nigerian Capital Market Development Fund (Establishment) Bill

Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill

He has also moved several motions addressing urgent regional concerns, including:

Call for aid for victims of rainstorms in various LGAs including Bassa, Olamaboro, and Omala

Urgent completion of the Junior Girls Model Secondary School in Odu-Okpiyegede (Dekina LGA)

Acceleration of the Ajaokuta–Otukpo Rail Line project

These legislative instruments directly reflect the needs and realities of Kogi East, amplifying the voices of constituents at the federal level.

Social and Developmental Interventions

Senator Echocho has equally made impressive strides through intervention programs tailored to improve everyday life in his constituency. Recognizing electricity as a catalyst for rural development, he has facilitated the provision of 500KVA and 250KVA transformers across towns and villages—helping boost local commerce and security.

In education, he has supported public primary schools with over 10,000 exercise books and driven the construction and rehabilitation of classroom blocks.

He has also built skill acquisition centres, reinforcing the importance of vocational learning for youth and women.

Water provision has also been a priority. Motorized boreholes have been installed in underserved communities including Emere, Emekutu, Mission Street, Erane, Egbeneba, Angwa, Ojoku, and many others—addressing a fundamental human need.

Given the agrarian nature of Kogi East, Echocho has promoted mechanized farming by distributing tractors and agricultural tools to farmers in areas like Bassa, Ibaji, Olamaboro, and Idah. His efforts have also led to the revival of the Acharu Palm Oil Mill in Egume and the construction of feeder roads, further opening rural areas to trade and productivity.

Healthcare, Security, and Empowerment

In healthcare, Senator Echocho has supplied medical equipment and drugs to the Dekina General Hospital, while also constructing modern healthcare centres in Okete and Ajiolo Ajikpome, alongside renovations to existing facilities.

Security has not been overlooked. He facilitated the construction of a zonal police station in Anyigba and provided an operational vehicle to the Odu branch of the vigilante group—strengthening local law enforcement.

His empowerment programs have reached hundreds of youths and women through training in cassava processing and various skill acquisition schemes. Additionally, he facilitated federal employment for many Kogi East youths in over 20 federal agencies, including FIRS, NSCDC, FRSC, Fire Service, Customs, NTA, and FAAN—restoring confidence in government and creating ripple effects of economic relief within families and communities.

A Tenure of Stability and Focus

Unlike the turbulent representation of Kogi East during the 8th Senate (2011–2015)—when internal litigation led to multiple turnovers between Senators Abdullahi Attai Aidoko and Isaac Alfa—Echocho’s tenure has been marked by stability. Although his own election was contested, the matter was swiftly resolved without disrupting his service delivery or legislative focus.

Looking Ahead

Senator Isah Jibrin (Echocho) embodies what it means to represent a people with commitment and vision. He has been a unifying figure, advocating passionately for the interests of all nine local government areas under his purview. As his tenure continues, it is hoped that the prevailing atmosphere of unity and cooperation will persist for the greater good of Kogi East.
