FRSC Steps Up Nationwide Enforcement to Check Highway Violations

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified enforcement activities nationwide to rein in traffic violations and eliminate dangerous practices on major highways as Nigerians travel for the end-of-year festivities.

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this during a strategic monitoring of vehicular movement in Kaduna, carried out as part of the ongoing Zero Tolerance special operation for the festive season.

Mallam Mohammed explained that the Corps had deployed a large number of personnel and logistics to major routes linking Kaduna, Abuja and Lokoja, following the heavy traffic recorded in recent days, particularly along the Abuja–Lokoja Road.
He noted that the monitoring exercise was also extended to the Abuja–Kaduna Road due to ongoing construction activities, which could further aggravate congestion if not properly controlled.
“We are here to ensure that drivers involved in speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, distracted driving and other dangerous acts are taken off the road,” he said. “This is to guarantee that responsible drivers, passengers, commuters and other road users can move freely and safely.”
The Corps Marshal added that after the Kaduna exercise, the monitoring team would return to the Abuja–Lokoja corridor to sustain enforcement and effective traffic management.
Commenting on observations made so far, Mallam Mohammed expressed concern over the high incidence of overloading, particularly the dangerous practice of mixed loading where passengers and goods are conveyed together on trucks.
According to him, FRSC operatives have recorded several cases of overloading, especially mixed loading, along the route.
On nationwide enforcement, the Corps Marshal said all sector commanders had been directed to ensure early deployment to identified traffic hotspots throughout the festive period.
He explained that the directive requires sector commanders across the federation to be proactive and maintain a strong presence at areas known to experience traffic challenges during this season.
Mallam Mohammed urged motorists to exercise discipline, patience and respect for fellow road users, calling on them to show restraint, uphold good conduct and support one another on the roads.
He warned that the Corps would not tolerate intimidation or bullying by motorists, stressing that offenders would be removed from the road to ensure smooth traffic flow.
