The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night as passengers were traveling from Gboko to Lagos. It was gathered that the attack took place a few kilometres from Otukpo town, where the assailants intercepted the vehicle and opened fire on it.
Confirming the incident on Sunday in Makurdi, the Information Officer of Benue Links Nigeria Limited, Johnson Ehi Daniel, said one of the company’s buses was attacked, leaving three passengers with gunshot wounds. He added that the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo.
Daniel disclosed that the company’s General Manager visited the injured passengers at the hospital on Sunday. He explained that the attack occurred at the Burnt Bricks area of Otukpo at about 7:00pm on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
“The management of Benue Links Nigeria Limited regrets to confirm an attack on one of its vehicles, PP974, which occurred at the Burnt Bricks area of Otukpo at about 7:00pm on Saturday, January 10, 2026,” he said.
“The vehicle, which departed Gboko en route to Otukpo to lodge for the night and continue its journey the following day, was attacked by suspected gunmen along the route.
“Thankfully, no life was lost during the incident. However, three passengers sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo, where they are responding positively to treatment.”
He added that the company’s General Manager, Comrade Alexander Aondohemba Fanafa, alongside the Business Manager, Edache Joseph, provided both logistical and emotional support to the victims and assured them that the company would bear the full cost of their medical treatment.
Daniel further stated that after visiting the hospital, the General Manager proceeded to the Otukpo Police Station, where he met with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and other officers of the Nigerian Police Force. During the visit, he commended the police for their prompt response to distress calls involving the company and urged them to sustain efforts at curbing criminal activities.
The General Manager also visited the Otukpo Motor Park, where he addressed Benue Links drivers on duty, reiterating that the company’s ban on night travel remains in force. He warned that any driver found violating the directive would face appropriate disciplinary action.
He also advised drivers to always obey traffic regulations, drive responsibly, remain courteous to passengers, and stay security-conscious at all times.
