A traditional ruler in Ondo State has been abducted by suspected kidnappers after armed men stormed his residence in a late-night attack and shot his wife before escaping into a nearby forest.

The incident, which occurred in Ode Oriya community of Owo Local Government Area, has heightened fear among residents and prompted an intensive search operation by security agencies.

The victim, identified as 60-year-old village head, Adeniyi Adelana, was reportedly taken away by about six armed men who invaded the community on Saturday night. His wife sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The abduction adds to the growing concerns over insecurity and the increasing number of kidnappings targeting prominent individuals, particularly in rural communities where security presence is often limited.
According to local sources, the gunmen arrived at the monarch’s residence at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Witnesses said the attackers were heavily armed and appeared to have carefully planned the operation.
During the attack, the assailants allegedly shot the monarch’s wife before forcefully taking the traditional ruler into a nearby forest. The incident reportedly caused panic in the community, forcing many residents to remain indoors.
Confirming the development, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, said the injured woman is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
He explained that tactical units were immediately deployed to the area to commence a comprehensive search-and-rescue operation.
According to him, security operatives are currently combing forests, bush paths, and suspected escape routes in an effort to rescue the traditional ruler and apprehend the kidnappers.
The incident has generated anxiety among residents of Ode Oriya, with many describing the abduction as a troubling indication of worsening insecurity.
Community leaders have appealed for calm while calling on security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing the safe return of the monarch.
A resident of the community described the incident as painful, noting that the traditional ruler was taken from his home while his wife was shot during the attack.
Security experts have also expressed concern, noting that attacks on traditional rulers often have wider psychological effects because of their role as symbols of unity, order, and communal identity.
Police authorities have urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist ongoing rescue efforts.
Analysts say the abduction raises serious concerns about the safety of local leaders and the increasing boldness of criminal elements operating in rural areas.
They warn that such attacks can destabilize communities, erode confidence in security institutions, and create fear among residents.
The incident is also expected to increase pressure on authorities in Ondo State to strengthen surveillance and improve security across rural communities.
Security observers note that kidnappers often take advantage of forested terrain and weak intelligence networks, making rescue operations more challenging.
Police tactical teams are expected to continue the search operation until the abducted traditional ruler is rescued.
Authorities may also monitor possible communication from the kidnappers should ransom demands emerge, while community leaders are expected to engage security officials on measures to enhance protection for traditional institutions.
The coming days are considered crucial in determining the outcome of the rescue efforts and the progress of the investigation.
The kidnapping of the traditional ruler and the shooting of his wife have left the Ode Oriya community deeply shaken and demanding urgent action from relevant authorities.
As security operatives sustain the manhunt, residents continue to hope for the safe return of their monarch and justice for those responsible for the attack.
