NiMet, L-PRES Partner to Expand Weather Monitoring for Livestock Farmers
By Iyojo Ameh
The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has strengthened its partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in a move aimed at improving weather monitoring and enhancing resilience within Nigeria’s livestock sector.
L-PRES, a national programme focused on boosting livestock productivity and helping farmers cope with climate-related challenges, is promoting the use of reliable data and information to support livestock farmers in adapting to unpredictable weather patterns.
During a courtesy visit to NiMet, the National Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Sanusi Abubakar, met with the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Professor Charles Anosike. As part of the engagement, L-PRES handed over four Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) to NiMet to strengthen the country’s meteorological monitoring capacity.
Abubakar congratulated Anosike on the successful public presentation of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, describing it as a critical tool for Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
He noted that the partnership between L-PRES and NiMet would play a vital role in supporting livestock farmers with timely weather information needed to enhance productivity and resilience.
In his remarks, Anosike applauded L-PRES for donating the weather monitoring equipment, describing the initiative as a valuable contribution to Nigeria’s weather observation network.
He disclosed that the new weather stations would be deployed in rehabilitated grazing reserves across the country to provide localized and accurate weather data that will assist livestock farmers in planning and managing their activities more effectively.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration, emphasizing that the partnership will strengthen climate information services, support livestock farmers, and contribute to sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria.
