Fear grips Innayin Community after deadly elephant invasion claims life, sparks search for missing resident.

Pandemonium broke out in Innayin Community in Oyo State after a wild elephant attack left one person dead and another missing.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 3:30 pm on Thursday, when residents raised alarm over the sudden appearance of the animal.


Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said operatives, working alongside local vigilantes and hunters, swiftly responded to a distress call from the area.

According to him, “The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public of an unfortunate incident that occurred on Thursday, 23rd April 2026, at about 1530HRS, involving the invasion of Innayin Community by a wild elephant.
“Upon receiving a distress call, police operatives, in collaboration with local vigilantes and hunters, quickly mobilised to the scene. On arrival, the lifeless body of one Ibrahim Tijani, a 45-year-old male, was found in a nearby bush with injuries consistent with an animal attack.”
Olayinka further disclosed that the deceased’s remains had been taken to the General Hospital, Iwere-Ile, for examination and preservation.
He added that another resident, Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, aged 50, is currently missing following an encounter with the same elephant.
“During ongoing search operations, another individual, identified as Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, was reported missing after an encounter with the animal. Intensive efforts are underway to locate him,” he said.
The police command noted that additional personnel, alongside local hunters and vigilantes, have been deployed to contain the situation and prevent further casualties.
Residents of Innayin and surrounding communities were advised to remain calm, stay away from the affected areas, and promptly report any sighting of the animal.
The command also stressed the need to handle the situation in line with wildlife conservation regulations, noting that the National Park Service Nigeria is being engaged to provide expert support.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Olugbenga, reassured residents of their safety.
“We understand the concerns this incident has generated within the community. Our officers are fully on ground, working with relevant stakeholders to secure the area and prevent further casualties,” he said.
He urged residents to remain calm, avoid the affected locations, and cooperate with authorities as efforts continue to bring the situation under control.
The police also commended the community for its cooperation and called for continued support for security agencies.
